Introduction to EAC
The EAC was founded in 1999. It is an international not-for-profit association of national organisations charged by law with the management of archaeological heritage.
Annual Activity Report
The 2025 Annual Activity Report is a good place to begin if you wish to find out more about EAC.
It provides a short introduction to the organisation and a quick overview of our recent activities.
Governance
The decision-making body for the EAC is the General Assembly of voting members which is convened at the Annual Meeting in March each year. Find our governing statutes and policies here.
Board
Management of the EAC is undertaken by the Board, which is composed of elected representatives from the membership. The Board meets 3 times a year.

Our strategies &
priorities
The vision of EAC is that the management of Europe’s heritage includes archaeological heritage as a central component, recognising its value to society and economy, and that that heritage is afforded adequate protection as a source of the European collective memory, as an instrument for historical and scientific study, and as a catalyst for collaboration and inclusion.
Looking Forward
In 2026, the EAC is addressing four priorities identified by its members: Heritage Crime, Citizen Science and Public Benefit, Landscape Management and Spatial Planning, and Climate Change and Sector Sustainability. Find out what actions the EAC is taking now to address these priorities here.
Strategic Plan
Find the EAC Strategic Plan (2022-2027) here. The organisation is currently working on a new Plan for 2027-2032.
Amersfoort Agenda & Making Choices
The EAC's Amersfoort Agenda (FR version) responded to the challenges laid out in the Valletta Convention and has guided the work of the organisation since 2015.
Building on the Amersfoort Agenda, the Making Choices initiative (2018) produced a range of guidance between 2024-2026 to address the themes it identified and provide support to members.
Working Groups
The EAC's working groups develop guidance and research to address priorities identified by members. Representatives are drawn from the EAC membership and external specialists. Some are joint initiatives with partner organisations. Find the list of current working groups here.
Heritage Symposium
The EAC holds an Annual Meeting for its members and interested colleagues, usually in March. The Symposium focusses on a specific archaeological heritage management topic. It provides opportunities for professional discussion and networking, and for members to share priorities and concerns. Information about past Annual Meetings can be found here. Resources for heritage management
The EAC publishes guidance, advice, research and news on archaeological heritage management topics for the benefit of its members and other heritage management practitioners.
Heritage Symposium Proceedings
The Proceedings of the EAC Heritage Management Symposium provide perspectives from across Europe on a specific theme every year. The emphasis is on sharing challenges, good practice and case studies. Taken together, the Proceedings form a detailed insight into changing heritage management practices across Europe over nearly three decades.
Recent volumes are available as printed and pdf volumes published by Archaeolingua, and as a digital publication by Internet Archaeology.
Guidance & advice
EAC guidance publications support heritage management practitioners by providing short documents to advocate for archaeological heritage to decision-makers; case studies and best practice examples for inspiration; and practical guidance for heritage management processes. Topics include Archaeological Archiving, Geophysics, Archaeological Significance, Public Benefit of Development-led Archaeology and Developing Research Frameworks.

European Affairs Update
The EAC and the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA) jointly publish a quarterly newsletter on relevant developments in the field of cultural heritage. The European Affairs Update brings you up to speed with the latest news, funding opportunities, events and resources. Sign up to the mailing list here.
